History/ Core Values

The desire to establish a permanent Buddhist Temple in the Melbourne area was launched by the local Thai community in  1990. A group of  dedicated volunteers established an exploratory group to make that happen.

After considerable thought and planning , the exploratory  group approved, in 1991, the go ahead to purchase and convert a residential home at 1024 Carlton Dr. in Melbourne, Florida.

Thanks to the hard work by countless volunteers, the home on Carlton Dr. was successfully converted into an usable place to practice their religion and to gather for social events and celebrate their Thai holidays.

Due to the success and popularity of the Carlton Drive temple, but restrained by its size and location, the temple needed  a new location to expand and grow.  Again, due to the extraordinary effort of volunteers and generous donations by temple members, a new eight acres building lot was secured at 4490 Aurora Rd. Melbourne, Florida.

By the summer of 2007, Wat Punyawanaram finally  had a dedicated temple, one that specifically had been  designed in a Thai style, and one that could grow and expand with its growing followers. The temple's expansion now allows it to share the  Buddhist teachings, provide a site for meditation training and be a social center for the Thai people, their friends, and guest.

Recently, on June 5. 2016,  the temple celebrated its ninth anniversary at it new Aurora Road location.  The temple continues to grow and expand and its success is made  possible by the countless hours dedicated by volunteers who make the conditions and activities for its followers, its friends, and guest a pleasurable place to visit and worship.
